Chinese Conversation Teacher (Mandarin Specialist)
Job Overview
We are seeking an energetic and articulate Chinese Conversation Teacher to join our language faculty. Your mission is to help students move beyond textbooks and rote memorization to achieve true fluency in Mandarin. You will cultivate a classroom environment that emphasizes authentic interaction, correct tone usage, and cultural context, empowering students to navigate real-world social and professional situations with confidence.
Job Responsibilities
Instructional Delivery: Lead engaging conversation-focused classes for various proficiency levels, emphasizing tonal accuracy, natural sentence structure, and colloquial expressions.
Curriculum Design: Develop lesson plans rooted in practical communication—such as business etiquette, travel, discussing current events, and social storytelling—that challenge students to think and respond in Mandarin.
Active Speaking Labs: Facilitate immersion activities like debates, role-plays, and "Chinese Corner" social sessions that encourage students to use the language in spontaneous, unscripted ways.
Personalized Feedback: Provide specific, actionable feedback on students' pronunciation (Pinyin/tones), vocabulary usage, and grammatical accuracy while maintaining the flow of conversation.
Cultural Context: Teach the "why" behind the language, helping students understand social customs, idiomatic nuances, and cultural references that are essential to natural communication.
Digital Integration: Use audio, video, and social media tools to expose students to various accents and speech patterns, making the learning experience contemporary and relevant.
Building Confidence: Foster a supportive atmosphere where students feel safe to practice difficult tones and patterns, turning the process of learning into a positive, iterative experience.
Job Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL/MTCSOL), Linguistics, or a related field; professional teaching certification is highly preferred.
Experience: 2+ years of experience in teaching Mandarin to non-native speakers, with a proven track record of improving student speaking proficiency.
Language Proficiency: Native or near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese (Standard Mandarin) with impeccable pronunciation and tone clarity. Strong proficiency in English to explain complex grammatical concepts.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in digital teaching tools (e.g., Zoom, interactive boards, online language-learning apps).
Familiarity with digital resources for Mandarin learners (e.g., HSK materials, authentic media sources).
Soft Skills:
Patience: An understanding of the unique challenges of learning tones and the ability to patiently correct students without discouraging them.
Engaging Personality: The ability to keep conversations lively, relevant, and fun, ensuring students remain motivated.
Flexibility: Capacity to adjust lesson plans on the fly based on student interest or specific conversational hurdles.
